I took the black lid off the box and the Kindle DX was inside, nesting in a piece of white plastic. I plugged in the Kindle DX first thing and while it was charging, (which takes around 3 hours or less) I could go ahead and start using the device. On top of the Kindle DX is a headphone jack so you can listen to your eBooks or other material being read out loud to you with the Text-to-Speech (TTS) function. On the left side of the Kindle DX are two slots that are for snapping the device into the Amazon Kindle DX Leather Cover, which doesn’t is sold seperately. And of course the Kindle DX has a QWERTY keyboard which lets you add annotations to text, the way you can write in the margins of a book.

Home shows the content stored on your Kindle DX as well as content archived at Amazon. And even more interesting is the fact that Amazon’s press release mentioned: Kindle DX will also sync with a range of mobile devices in the future. The back of the Kindle DX reminds me a lot of the back of an iPod or the 1st generation iPhone.
With its 16-level gray scale screen, the Kindle DX packs one the best EBook Reader display we’ve seen, trumping the displays found on the original Kindle and on Sony’s PRS-700, both of which only handle 8 levels of gray scale. For connectivity, the Kindle DX uses Amazon’s Whispernet data service for downloading content. At slightly more than a third of an inch thick, Kindle DX is a lot thinner and a tad taller than the original.
Pricing and availability of the Kindle DX will set you back US $489.00. Although the “text to speech” is computer generated, I was impressed by its natural flow and intonation on the Kindle DX. In addition to the memory, Kindle DX has an improved display that reads like real paper, with 16 shades of gray, for clear text and crisp images. The Kindle DX also turns pages 20% faster than the original.
